Health Information Management (HIM) is a healthcare profession that includes several STEM occupations combining knowledge and skills from healthcare, informatics, information technology, and business areas such as finance, legal compliance, management, and leadership. Credentialed HIM Professionals work in all healthcare settings alongside clinical and administrative colleagues on interprofessional teams. As healthcare becomes increasingly dependent on data, information, analysis, and technology, Health Information professionals ensure the availability, quality, integrity, usefulness, and security of health information required for evidence-based clinical decisions, reimbursement, compliance, and healthcare business operations.
Graduates from our accredited programs are recruited by hospitals, medical practices, government agencies, software and technology vendors, insurance companies, academic institutions, cybersecurity companies, healthcare reimbursement companies, consulting firms, and many other organizations involved with management of health information and technology. Anywhere health data exists, there is a need for health information professionals. Many HIM professionals are able to work from home!
The U.S. Department of Labor includes HIM roles in the categories of Medical and Health Services Managers and Health Informatics Specialists which have many current job openings and continued growth. HIM career options are further described at the following links:
